Bioclear® at Hart Dental

illustration of a tooth inlay/only/overlayThe Bioclear Method is a conservative technique in which a dental composite is wrapped around a tooth using special molds to fashion a fully functional, beautiful tooth. The service uses injected heated composites as an alternative to traditional bonding, veneers and crowns. Bioclear is more affordable and less invasive than conventional methods.

The method also can be used to close spaces between teeth. For example, Bioclear can be used to fill in black triangles between teeth that form as we age or after orthodontics/braces or gum surgeries.

Minimal Tooth Reduction, Maximum Aesthetic Benefits

One of the most significant benefits of Bioclear is only 0-5% of your tooth needs to be reduced, yet approximately 70-80% of ultimate aesthetics will be attained. With traditional ceramic restorations like crowns and veneers, up to 65% of tooth structure must be removed first.

With a standard crown, 40-65% of your tooth will be cut away and 70-85% of ultimate aesthetics will be achieved. Although custom shaded crowns will reach 95% of final aesthetics, you will still sacrifice the same 40-65% of your tooth structure.

Now that you know the facts, what is your preferred option?

How Is This Method Different From Bonding?

Traditional composite resin bonding can leave ledges and gaps at the margins which harbor bacteria that leads to staining, chipping, and cavities. The Bioclear Method eliminates these ledges and gaps. As a result, teeth are fuller, stronger and more attractive. Best of all, there’s little to no damage to the tooth and no staining or leakage.

How Does It Differ From Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers cosmetically change the front of the teeth to make them more aesthetically pleasing. These veneers can provide beautiful results, particularly on those who have teeth that are worn, chipped and full of broken fillings. They do, however, have some drawbacks. In many cases the Bioclear Method has advantages over veneers:

Conservative. Most of the time, tooth structure needs to be removed to place the porcelain veneers. With the Bioclear Method, there is minimal to no reduction of the tooth. You’re actually making the tooth stronger.

Repairable. Porcelain veneers are durable, but they can chip, especially in people who grind their teeth. When the veneers chip, they often cannot be repaired and must be replaced, which can be expensive. Because the Bioclear Method uses dental composite, not porcelain, if the teeth chip, they can be added to and repaired easily and inexpensively.

Affordable. While prices vary, the Bioclear Method is typically about half the cost of a porcelain veneer, which makes it much more accessible to many patients.

FAQ

What happens during the Bioclear procedure?

The first step is removing any trace of biofilm from the teeth. Next thin mylar forms that wrap around the tooth provide the mold for a new tooth surface. Liquid composite is then injected into the forms. The composite is color-matched to the area of the teeth. The resin is then hardened using a type of ultraviolet light. The tooth is then formed and polished to a smooth finish.

How many visits are required for the Bioclear Method?

Just one visit is needed, making it a time-saving treatment.

Why would I use Bioclear instead of a crown?

The main reason to opt for Bioclear is that the treatment is conservative, allowing you to keep more of your natural tooth structure. Also, a crown is at a greater risk of having recurrent decay. Decay begins at the edge of the crown and can progress underneath it if not addressed immediately. Most crowns block X-rays from allowing us to see what’s happening underneath it. This isn’t the case with a Bioclear overlay.

Who can benefit from Bioclear?

Any patient who is interested in an another way to restore their teeth is an ideal candidate.

Is Bioclear only used on the front teeth?

No, it can be used on posterior teeth, as well. The method also can be used in place of an inlay or onlay when repairing a cavity.

What if I don’t like the shape that’s been made?

We can remove the composite and mold it into a different shape.

Will my insurance cover Bioclear treatment?

Bioclear is not covered by insurance. However, we offer convenient payment plans.
